This was one of the first CD's that I ever bought. I had heard ABBA on "70's Saturday Night" and really liked their music. This CD features ABBA doing what they do best; creating catchy pop tunes that stick in your head and brighten up your day.
Normally at this point, I'd start telling you a little about the band. But if you follow the link I'm sure you'll find out more than enough about them, so I'll just stick to the music. Some of the highlights.
"Dancing Queen" This is the song that most people have heard of and/or associate the most with ABBA. It's got some nice harmonies and an interesting piano part that I have attempted to play before, despite it being in some ungodly key like E.
"Take a Chance on Me" This is a nice song for people who feel like the opposite sex is continually passing them by, in favor of others. Which, if you judge by the pictures included in the cd, probably happened a lot to the four ABBA-ians. Not surprising, then, that they ended up marrying each other. Only to get divorced later....but I digress.
"Fernando" This song was featured on the popular (ok, maybe not, but it's getting there!) sitcom "That Seventies Show." When they went to the disco in Kenosha, it was playing and then Eric & Donna sang it & danced in their driveway. It's a nice enough song...about a couple of young revolutionaries, one of whom is named "Fernando."
"Voulez Vous" That means something in French but I do not have the energy to figure out what. All I know is, it's a good song, a little darker sound maybe. A lot of imagery in the lyrics. You know, sort of club-hopping Eurotrash sort of folks, going around, wearing black, dancing to this tune. It's a happy picture.
"Does Your Mother Know" Noteable if only for the fact that this is one of the few ABBAtunes where one of the guys sings.
"Waterloo" A very fun song to sing along to. It was in a Simpsons episode, too. Smithers was supposed to have some threatening recording boom out from the tank, but instead he got this song. In the liner notes, it says that this was the first song that got them attention around the world. And rightfully so.
There's 13 more songs, some dance-type music, some more mellow. All definitely
worth checking out.
