Stunt--Barenaked Ladies (1998)

This is honestly one of the best CD's I own. I must stress this from the get-go, I didn't just buy this CD because I liked "One Week." Actually, I had heard that song, but the deciding factor in my getting it was hearing "Light Up My Room" on KURE, the ISU radio station. So just to clear that up.

One Week Despite it being overplayed, this really is a good song, with a neat video to boot. When I hear this song, I think of sitting in my aunt & uncle's living room in Alameda, sitting on the couch and watching the video on MTV. I bought the CD the Saturday it came out, so I knew the words to this song when it was still relatively new. And people were impressed by that =)

It's All Been Done This is a fine song, and I hope the single does well on the radio. It's also a great one to sing along with. My favorite line is "Will I cry, will I smile, as you run down the aisle?" Good storytelling type lyrics.

Light Up My Room Probably my favorite track on the album, tied w/"Call & Answer." It's just a very sweet song. I love the guitar solo early on in the tune. The best thing about this song is that it gives me hope that somewhere there is the pe rfect guy out there for me, and that this song will be playing when I meet him/realize this fact about an existing guy.

I'll Be That Girl One of the weaker tracks on the album. It kind of wanders and doesn't make a strong point. I am troubled by the line "If I had a gun/there'd be no tomorrow." Even having said all this, it's not that bad a tune, just not as g ood as some of the greats.

Leave The best thing about this song is the do do do part. It has all these harsh lyrics telling someone to leave then just starts going do do do. I call that irony.

Alcohol A very funny song although I always feel odd if I'm listening to it and my parents are around. Like they'll start questioning the music I am listening to. I love the "chug" section. I can vividly imagine the band members engaged in su ch behaviour (spelled that way since they're Canadian)

Call and Answer A terriffic song. I didn't even pay much attention to it until I read RS's review of the CD and they cited it as one of the better songs. And after repeated listenings, I have come to concur. It's kind of sad, and I feel like it was kind of written for me. Well I identify a lot with the lyrics anyway.

In the Car Another song you don't want to hear with your parents around. Most bands don't address such topics but it makes for a good song anyway. I like the harmonies on certain parts of the song. I love the part about the girl hearing this song and thinking it's her.

Never is Enough This song is noteable if only for the line "Buy a giant backpack/sew a flag on the back." It reminds me of how Faith had the Capture-the-Flag flag on her backpack all of last year.

Who Needs Sleep? I like this song ok, it's just not a favorite. It's easy to get stuck in your head, and it's generally applicable to the situation I face at night when I cannot sleep.

Told You So This is probably my least favorite song on the album. The only interesting thing about it is that Lori was singing the "viral infection" part at play practice one night. And she sang it a lot.

Some Fantastic This is a nice song, but it just seems a little bit too much like "Never is Enough." I like the part about how "you'll see other guys are jerks." Just another messed-up relationship song.

When You Dream The last song on the album, and a nice way to end it up. I sometimes don't get to it, since it's at the end, but it's still a nice peaceful song. Stream-of-consciousness lyrics a la the first song on the album. Interes ting, eh?

A total of 13 nice songs that make for a great 5th album from a fun band.
