Today is October 25. Basically there will be no October page. Starting
Nov 1, look for the land of rach at pair.com:
http://www55.pair.com/rachelpi also you can check out my .Mac homepage at
http://homepage.mac.com/rachelpi
But the journal will be on Pair.
Training is going well, everyone is nice. Got a cat, Calypso. he's orange.
A Brief Essay
After perusing this site, I was reminded of just
how sexualized nearly any occupation a woman could enter into has become. You have
your traditional nurse, maid, waitress, but the sexy secretary is now Executive
Lady. There's also cop, construction worker, military officer, and FBI costumes.
I'm sure if you looked, you could find a sexy librarian costume.
One notable
omission would be the geek girl, grrl coder, sexy hacker, what have you. It would
probably
have to come as some strange offshoot of the librarian because all geeks, like all
librarians, must wear glasses. They do have the Sexy Trekkie outfit which I guess is
a step in the right direction as well. Probably the closest you would get is the
cyber punk look but still not really what I'm going for.
So one of the main reasons I didn't update for so long is laziness. The other is
that isua wasn't accepting my Kerberos tickets. So I tried an experiment which was
to follow ISU's directions
for secure FTP/Telnet on my work laptop. I was able to get in, no problem,
leaving the October 25 entry as proof. (Technically I guess my first experiment was
to log in to webmail to make sure rah1 was still active). So I followed the
instructions once again, no luck. I tried editing the Kerberos .plist file, no
dice. Finally I tried specifying isua2.iastate.edu, and that seemed to work. So I'm
not sure what my old .term file said, but I've changed it to always open isua2.
Hopefully no more problems from here on out. So now I don't know if I want to go
through with moving the journal for real over to pair. What does anyone think?
Somewhat later Oh yeah, and another thing. My grandma told me she's
participating in some 40-day long thing at her church. The topic is to find out your
purpose in life. (or something, not sure). Anyway, if an 87-year-old woman doesn't
know what her purpose in life is, what hope do the rest of us have??
Today is October 28. It's
Official! Grand Opening
November 6. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Today at training I did a good
skit where I played a sleazy Hollywood producer type. I did a vague NYC/Boston
accent, and everyone loved it. Some memorable lines:
Me: We got all these yahds and yahds of 16 and 35 mm film--
Adam: What's a "yahd"?
Me: About tree feet.
Chad: (listing off the applications in the suite, ticking them off on his
fingers)
Me: (aside/stage whisper) Good thing there weren't more products,
or the kid woulda had to take off his socks!
Well, maybe you had to be there. I got huge laughs, people liked the voice. It was
fun.
