CatSongs continue

Today is November 25. I made up a new CatSong which is actually a CatToySong if you want to get technical about it.
Who catnip bee now? Who catnip beeeeee now? Oh catnip bee laying on my floor. Needs refilled, C-po won't play no more.
When I get a house I plan to get a cat tree for Calypso to climb around on.

Cultural Literacy 201: Actually watching stuff you've just seen referenced a million times

Today is November 24. I'm just settling down with the first disc of Star Trek (the original series). I caught part of an episode late one night on CBS and decided I should try watching it for reals. Check back next week when Calypso is wearing his own Starfleet uniform.

Thursday, Turkey Day, I went to Ames and did the family-dinner thing with Rod & Rose, Kelly & Danny, Emmy, and of course the two grandmas. Jonathan was home from Toledo, so he was also there. We had ham balls, just to buck tradition. There were two pies, pecan & pumpkin, and I chose pecan :-p Rod & Rose's cat, Sadie was out and about, so we petted her. After we had eaten and had a good visit, we went over to Emmy's place at U Village. Kelly and Danny had brought their cat, Miley, to stay there with Em's two, Max and Ellie. So it was a very kitty-intensive day. Miley is a tiny little calico stray that Kelly & Danny adopted. Emily got her two from work (she works in one of the labs at the vet college). They are both part siamese, although Max has more of the outward appearance. He has gorgeous blue eyes, and he has a stripey tail like a lemur. It was extra bizarre because Em lives just a stone's throw from Jess's place in the U Village. She's even an "E" unit just like Jess was. And they both have(had) two cats, one more than you're supposed to have, but it's ok, b/c one of them is shy, and not likely to show him/her self when any kind of authority is around.

After that, Jonno and I went to see Dad and Grandpa at assisted living. We basically just sat around and chatted and watched football. Grandpa had his dinner in the dining room, but we did not go with him. I went to the truck stop on my way home to have an evening meal. Unfortunately, they were out of turkey and dressing, but I had a nice stuffed pork loin and some p'taters. Double unfortunately, I found out that they're closing on Monday =( This is a bummer because although I'm far from a regular, it is a nice place to get something to eat at night.

Thursday night, a subgroup of us from the West Des Moines Community Band played at J Creek's midnight opening. It was cold, but fun. I got to play my bells which are not only my favorite instrument to play, but also easily played with one's hands up one's sleeves for warmth. You can see a pic of us here. I am in the upper-left corner, wearing a santa hat, standing behind the saxomophone. We played from 10:30 until the mall opened at 12:01, taking a 15-minute break at 11:15 to warm up. At 12:01, they shot off some glitter/streamer cannons and opened the doors. We played "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" at this time, and the huge line of people poured in. Once the line had mostly made it in, I too went inside. The Apple store (and some others) had decided not to open up, and I had no interest in bargain hunting. I did, however, have an interest in not getting trampled, so I headed on home.

Last night (this is the last paragraph, I promise) my dad and brother came down and we had some dinner at Champp's and then went and saw American Gangster. For me, the 2nd time, but a good enough flick to see twice. there was talk of seeing No Country for Old Men, or Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, but we wanted to go with a film that was entertaining, not just important or well-reviewed. Dad got burned by Memoirs of a Geisha so he can be a bit gunshy of the good reviews that don't lead to an enjoyable movie-going experience. Maybe I'll go get some enchiladas later. Mmm, enchiladas.

Made in America

Today is November 17. I was made in America, but my parts have proven to be sub-quality, that crack and peel and get split ends. I'm trying not to let it get me down.

Today I looked at three more houses. One was overall pretty nice except it did not have a basement, and its "attached" garage was actually just an "abutting" garage (i.e. you have to go outside to get to it). The second was actually pretty cool, but it didn't have a dishwasher and it was a bit outside my price range. The other was downright scary - admittedly the owner's daughter hadn't finished cleaning it yet but it was still weird. It had a basement, but it was impossible to envision what could be done with the space. Also it smelled like there was a gas leak or something.

After looking at houses, I drove around and looked at the outside of a couple more houses that I want to tour sometime. I have branched out of V-Junk. I realized that I often have a poor idea of what I really want. Case in point, the job search. As I started looking for jobs, I swore I would never want to work for a huge co. like Wells Fargo or Principal. And here I am, working at the big blue triangle, and loving it.

Today it also became pretty apparent that there is no such thing as the Perfect House (or casa de soul mate if you will). There will have to be trade-offs if I want to get this done in a reasonable amount of time. Stef at work said she and her husband took a YEAR which I just cannot see putting myself and my realtor (Adam) through that! Tomorrow I'm going to try and get it together and attend a few Open Houses, you know the Sun 1-4 kind. After the driving around, I came home and watched some Flight of the Conchords, took a nap, and watched more FoC. Right now I'm sitting in my room listening to my Yacht Rock playlist, contemplating putting my clean laundry away and tidying up a bit. If you follow the link on the YR page, you will see that they are currently working on episode 11, which is just beyond awesome. I won't be fancy enough to see it in NYC, but I'll get my RSS kagigger or something to tell me when it's online.

Trompin' around town

Today is November 11. So here's what I did yesterday. In the AM, I walked to a house for sale and checked that out with a realtor. On the way there and back I took some pictures of other houses for sale in the area, because that's WAY easier than writing crap down in a notebook. I had breakfast at the Dahl's deli just because I never had before. I basically had a #10 (2 eggs, 2 sausage, HB, toast) and looked over some of the papers the realtor gave me. Obviously the road to home ownership has just started, and I have a lot more work to do. But it did feel good to "get out there." If I haven't already sent you the link to the house, just e-mail me. Not that I think a ton of people are reading this, but I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable putting a picture of my possible future house on here, complete with address ;-)

Then later in the day, I went to a big event for the Iowa Democratic Party called the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. We Richardson folks met at a motel and there was a big rally in the ballroom. Then we all grabbed signs and walked over to Vet's Auditorium. There was a fancy dinner on the floor of Vet's and then the rest of us were all up in the stands. It was really exciting. Each candidate had a section or two of supporters, each with signs and various plastic items. We had glow neclace thingies in various colors. I had an orange one and then somehow I got a pink one that wasn't really working. I was cracking it but then it came open and some of the glow stuff got on my hand and I was scared. It was a lonnng day. I left at like 10:45 and it was still going on. My guy had already talked, heh.

Today I did absolutely nothing; it was great. Well, I take that back. I made a casserole, and emptied the dishwasher and put the dirty dishes in there. After the Fox shows I am going to force myself to go to the grocery store and hit the gym. This week I'll be talking with a mortgage broker to see what the scoop is there, find out what kind of a rat-hole I'll be permitted to live in.

Quick thing, more later

Today is November 10. It has been a big day, and I will give a full writeup tomorrow, but for now I just want to jot this down so I remember. Way before Skwisgaar and Toki, I have enjoyed making words plural that do not need to be. Time for sleeps, go to works, give someone loves. Anyway, I was at Perkin's tonight and I heard a girl say "Have fun at works" to someone on her cell phone. Perhaps I imagined it, but if not, I'd like to think that this manner of speaking is catching on.

I'm old, but I'm not someone's old lady. Discuss.

Today is November 5. A busy bee for a busy birthday. Now I'm relaxing and watching a program on Carol Burnett on PBS. I got some nice web messages and calls, and a sweet star-shaped balloon! And no one threw my balloon out the window this time, making it the best birthday, ballon-wise, since '96.

It's only 9-something but I'm already sleepy! Calypso's all snuggled up on the couch here and I think he has the right idea.

Kevin Corrigan = Go-to Sleazy Guy

Today is November 2. I just got back from seeing American Gangster. Not a bad way to spend an evening, I gotta say. It featured dudes from two of my favorite programs: Crosetti from Homicide as an old-guard Mafia guy, and Deadwood's Sol Star. The movie was brought to you by Smoking, as well as Booze, Guns, and Salt. Some scenes that really catch you off guard, and some scenes that make you say "Russell Crowe" a la Miranda. Try not to stab your screen when idiot Carrie screeches though. Obviously, Miranda is my favorite, and Carrie is kind of a dillhole.

As I tracked down what episode that quote came from, I saw that it involves Carrie's birthday, where none of her friends show up. Pls I hope that doesn't happen to me tomorrow =( (Well, I'm giving one of them a ride to the restaurant so I'm guaranteed at least one dining companion)

Welcome to my lair
