Today is December 31. I'm watching the movie Manolia. It's one I have wanted to see for awhile, since I had heard good things. I had heard that Famous Mortimer himself was in this movie in a small part, and I was thinking I'd have to watch very carefully to catch him. But he was right there at the beginning, all smiling and dealing blackjack.

The main reason for wanting to post just now is to talk about the Best/Favorite Albums of 2005.
  1. The Mars Volta: Frances The Mute. Picked this one up on the strength of the write-up in that special edition progressive rock mag I got. It's excellent all the way through. Porbably my favorite track is L'via L'viaquez. You could crank that up and seriously rock out.
  2. Dane Cook: Retaliation. The best thing about this is that even though I had just seen him live, there was very little overlap between the material on stage and what is on these two discs. Makes for some fun times quoting with your co-workers. Off the top of my head, my favorite bit is where he says every guy would like to own a monkey, and be part of a heist. Monkey??? I'm in your closet! It's a little meaner than Harmful if Swallowed, a little harsher on us ladies, but still great from start to finish.
  3. The Hold Steady: Separation Sunday. As Jill pointed out "The Hold Steady" sounds like it could be one of the random band names that I have heard of, but never heard their music, that I use to irritate my friend Molly. ("What about....The Arcade Fire? What about.....My Chemical Romance? What About....The Decembrists?") But The Hold Steady are so very cool. To me, it's the kind of band David Chris Jerry & Tina would have formed if they weren't east coast new-wave art students, and were instead midwestern post-punks that needed to ROCK. It makes me want to start my own band where I just shout over hot guitar lixx.
I'm sure there were others, but I can't think of them. I hope everyone had a good 2005. Looking forward to things happening in 2006. L8rs.

Today is December 27. Yesterday was oh so busy at the store. I'm talking crazy, can't more because of the people around you crowded. Into the double digits for folks in the queue at any given moment. Luckily we had a good crew and everyone made it out alive. I bought a demo 60G iPod to replace the one that was lost, "found," but never given back to me. (See August 19) Might have Lawrence see if he can doctor it up with the Ice Creme. Right now it is happy to play my songs and dislay their cover art. I'm considering that a gift to myself with my gift money. I also got the game of "I Love the 80s" from Jonathan and Christine, and some piney kitchen linens, along with a red mug and special cocoa from Bill, Lisa, Louie and Jay. I bought a TON of DVDs for myself in December so we can think of applying the money retroactively to those too. It's not my fault; a bunch of good titles just came out at once it seems. There's not a whole lot that I really need or want to buy. Clothes: I need to completely be getting RID of clothes, not buying more. Maybe I could hire someone to make a t-shirt quilt for me, thus both spending money and getting rid of some clothes. Who knows. Hope everybody out there had a nice holiday and got to spend time with cool people. Also I would say only go to a mall if you absolutely have to. Otherwise you're just inviting shame upon your house.

Today is December 25. I'm at my dad's, sneaking onto Earthlink. I was going through some old stuff trying to find my Nerd Illustrateds (my zine from grades 6-8) so I could start transcribing them. Also I found a stash of book covers that I had decorated in HS. They had pre-printed ones with the Norseman head on them, but you could turn them around and have plain white to color and style to your heart's content. The physics one is really cool. Not only does it have a little sampler of all the nail poilshes I owned at the time (labeled--I must have done it when I had the book home for homework one night!) but also song lyrics rom a variety of bands. Not only the expected Yes and Rush (Xanadu!) but also Pearl Jam's Jeremy, Elton John's Someone Saved My Life Tonight, and Nirvana's Heart-shaped Box. Plus a lil' bit of Landslide for good measure. It's kind of like a time capsule of whatever songs were getting stuck in my head 3rd period of my senior year.

Here is an entry I wrote last night at Grandpa's
Today is December 24th. I am at my Grandpa's house in Ames. If I really absolutely needed to, I could grab yon phonecord and dial in to Earthlink. I only have an access number for Boone, though so I woudln't want to be all long-distance dialing. I seriously wish nano (the word processing program) would actually word wrap. It doesn't want to, no matter what sorts of flags or options you set. Or if I had unix *skills* I could maybe get nano off there and return to the glory of the Pine Composer.

Right now we are straight up watching Bad Santa. When I first got here, they were watching a Chris Rock special. It's the one that features tussin, the dry ball, the big piece of chicken, and some other lines that Chris (Stormy, not Rock) used to quote all the time. Then the Blue Collar Comedy Movie came on so we watched the first couple guys on that. It was kind of a tradition from when we used to go out to Colorado - Joe H. had their CD from before the movie was even out.

Tomorrow we're gonna come back to Grandpa's and have a nice meal. I may have mentioned this here before but I got Bill, Lisa, Louie and Jay Seasons 1 & 2 of Arrested Development. Hopefully they are still into the show. Otherwise, I dunno, I think Jonathan had put them on his "list" and so maybe if they don't appear in his stocking, my copies could find a home with him and Katy.

Well that is probably all for now. The late great John Ritter is arguing with displaced-Santa Joel(?) Murray. Catch ya later.

So that was fun. This morning we have been listening to some good stuff - Beggars Banquet, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, a christmas CD my dad's friend Erika made for him, and of course Willie Nelson's Pretty Paper. The first 2 were on CD's I burned for Dad for part of his present. BB was dl'ed from iTMS and I printed it up with cover art and track listing and a sticker for the CD. I also burned him a disc of AC/DC, Back in Black and Dirty Deeds, just from my own collection. I had to take 1 track about balls off to get both albums to fit, and then I hand-wrote the tracklisting on the CD. Hopefully he can still get some enjoyment out of it.

The Highlander was a documentary, and the events happened in real time
mood:   calm
Today is December 17. The 'calm' mentioned above is just temporary, between work today and tomorrow. Today I was there for 10 hours, 9 working, 1 break. I was by myself at the bar til 1 and let me tell you it was a little zooey. I helped this one lady with her crazy slideshow thing for a DVD. When it worked she was pretty psyched. Then after my break I got to be in the back, working on different kinds of things. I answered the phone a lot. I don't really mind answering the phone if it's just to give info or put stuff on hold.

After work I was pretty hungry but I sure as hell wasn't going to the grocery store or any kind of store. I had a vague memory of a Chinese restaurant in V-Junk that did take-out so I went there. Cafe Su is the name, and it is one of the classiest places I have been to in a long time. The decor is very lovely and modern inside. They gave me a hot tea to sip, and I listened to a 3-man combo playing some jazzy music. Then I went home and ate my food and watched ATHF.

The more we see, the more we know

Today is December 14. I'm watching the movie Over The Edge. I had heard of it from Pagan Kennedy's great book (and manual for my life since I first read it in 10th grade) Platforms. Thought it sounded pretty cool. Then when I became a Fu Manchu fan in 99, I ran into it on King of the Road and found that they even cited it as an influential film.

This movie has pretty much the best soundtrack ever. I'm talking multiple Cheap Trick like "Speak Now..." "Hello There," "Surrender" (natch), Van Halen's "You Really Got Me," "Teenage Lobotomy" by the Ramones, "Just What I Needed" and "My Best Friend's Girl" by the Cars. And we are only 39 minutes into the thing. No wonder it took them so long to get out on DVD, all the music clearances. This movie shows what it was like before Playstations and Cable and stuff where every kid had to go outside and cause trouble. I would definitely recommend it to fans of 70's So-Cal (as seen in Foxes, or Roller Boogie or even Lords of Dogtown). I mean I'm just guessing that New Grenada is supposed to be in California, but I don't think they have said for certain. And yes, a kid at the very beginning is wearing a Rush tee. I'll try to make a screengrab and send it on over to Power Windows.

Ok, so I checked on wiki and they are saying the movie takes place in Colorado but that it was inspired by events in Cali. So I was half-right. Maybe we'll just file it under 70's-not-NY (since 70's New York is so iconic - Pellham 123, the Warriors, Annie Hall, etc etc)

Orange Cat Road Trip
mood:   groggy
Today is December 11. Why have I not been posting, what the hell, people? Right now I am watching the movie Harry and Tonto and it is about an older gent just this side of curmudgeon and his orange key. There was a scene where Harry was saying he didn't like Tonto's attitude and he was kind of chewing him out so I felt a little better about when I have to get after C-po for being so naughty. They must have totally tranq'd this cat because he is super calm in most of the scenes, like right now they are driving in a car and Tonto is sitting on the dash cool as hell.

I'm in this weird phase where I should eat something but I have no idea what I am hungry for or what would be remotely good for my system to eat. Maybe I will cook up some eggs and potatoes and slice an apple.

Here are some other orange cat movies I could think of. Milo and Otis, The Aristocats, Oliver and Company. I suppose you could also say the Garfield movie but I would rather not since it looked pretty stupid. I remember for awhile Virgil (our neighbor) had, in addition to his 2 black cats Shadow and Midnight, a polydactyl orange kitty that Jonathan and I started calling Milo. Orange stripy cats are pretty awesome. Speaking of movies here is something I just remembered. There is a new thing I invented the other day which is if you are watching a movie and there are two hot guys you can make a Brokeback Mountain joke. Like I was watching Clay Pigeons which has Joe Quinn Phoenix and Vince Vaughn (See also: Nov 26 entry) and I was all "Why can't this movie turn into Brokeback Mountain?" Of course it helped that they were both sort of cowboyish in Clay Pigeons. Then SNL had the bit with Alec Baldwin and Will Forte as total grizzled old prospectors in love.

Today is December 3. It appears my Netflix rental history has caught up to me. I received an informational flyer in the mail today about The Governor's Conference on LGBT Youth. It is sponsored by the GLBT Youth In Iowa Schools Task Force. I think it is fine that I was invited (might even go, it looks interesting) but I would just be curious how they got my name. An Iowa Democratic Party mailing list perhaps? The guy that wrote the Bunnicula books is gonna be there. Also Matt Shepard's mom, and the man who started the first Gay-Straight alliance in schools. So, a little surprising but interesting.

Right now I'm watching the Dane Cook ep of SNL. The other day I got Calypso a toy that is so goddamn shiny you can barely look at it and he has had some fun with it, doing flips in the air and stuff. It's kind of amazing really when you think of what a big thug he is. Now it is time for the monologue so I'd better go.
