Today is March 1. Well last week was full of school-related misery. (In
Cpr E 483 I announced that people could call me "NoJo" for "No Joy.")
But now it's the weekend and all is well. Last night Chris and I ate
pizza and played Animal Crossing. We also went to Target to chat with
Brent. In the process, I found another pineapple Hello Kitty doll.
They only had the smallest size but according to the tag, there are 2
larger sizes. Yay! (I was trying to find a pic of her online but no
luck)
Today is March 3. I got a new mouse.
Or "pointing device" as all the documentation says. Also at Best Buy, I
got Red Dwarf
DVD's! Very very exciting. There have been eight seasons (or
"series" in Brit-parlance) and so far I and II have been released on DVD
in
the UK, US, and Oz. I am looking forward to watching them all from the
beginning. When I used to watch the show on public television, I could never catch the
episodes in any particular order.
Today is March 5. Birthday shout-out to Kendra W. at UNI. She's
studying to be a teacher, I think. I keep remembering Conan singing "I'm
all out of love, I'm so lost without you..." he was obsessing on Air
Supply awhile ago and he made the band play that song for him. I don't
really know any more of the words than that, so that phrase keeps running
through my mind. (Btw, I actually like Air Supply. I have fond memories
of listening to their greatest hits tape while playing "Memory" on the
living room floor with my mom and brother. It's quite possible that we
only combined those 2 activities (Memory and Air Supply) once, but for
some reason it sticks with me)
Everyone said "Relax;" "Relax," said everyone.
I dont' know, that just felt like a poem to me for some reason. G'night.
Today is March 6. Is this
me? ::Cries::
Today is March 7. Terrible day. The fact that no one has e-mailed re:
yesterday's question (see below) only re-confirms my suspicions. I am a
failure in my computer education. I can't get anything accomplished in
my labs because I'm so lost. I want to cry but that makes me even more
pathetic. I dread going to class each day because it just means falling
farther and farther behind. I'm going to leave lab now and try to get a
VHDL book, see if maybe that can open my mind. My wasted potential is
heartbreaking.
Today is March 11. Weekend was good. Confidence basically
restored
(that is, until set foot in lab again...can you say dreading?) via Chris and Terrek. Good
people, both. I just gotta pull myself up by my bootstraps (or
something).
It was a lovely day outside. Sun shining, warm air, snow melting and
getting pools of water everywhere. I wore my Jackalope t-shirt that I
got in Colorado and Barry Larkin (head percussion guy) commented on it,
like, "Hey, someone else acknowledges the existence of jackalopes!" or
words to that effect. It made me very happy. =)
I watched Pop-Up Video on
VH1. They don't really make episodes of the show like they used to.
Recently I have seen a couple specials, one was top 20 of 2002 videos and
the one i saw today was top 20 of winter 2003. So obviously these are
new (and therefore mostly sucky) songs, but in order to get all 20
popped, the don't show the whole video. Mostly I just watched the one
today with the sounds off so I didn't have to hear any of that Jay-Z
nonsense. Also on Divas weekend awhile back (I believe it was Superbowl
weekend) they had Divas Live Pop-Up edition. They had Miss Stevie on that one, so it was
more acceptable.
Today is March 12. Hypothesis: making hissing sounds at canpickers who
enter the 305/483 Lab will cause them to go away. Tested: just a second
ago as one was picking through our trash while I was trying to work on
483. Result: Inconclusive. He left but I think that was just because he
was done with our trash.
Today is March 13. Lookit me! I posted
something. Don't you luuuuuuuuv my avatar? I made it myself. Good
Presto bunny =)
Oh yeah and LTJ
are coming to Des Moines in April, sweet.
Just 'cause I haven't had many pictures lately...

-Perfect- You're the perfect
girlfriend. Which
means you're rare or that you cheated :P
You're
the kind of chick that can hang out with your
boyfriend's
friends and be silly. You don't
care about presents or about going to
fancy
placed. Hell, just hang out. You're just happy
being around
your boyfriend.

Today is March 14. Happy Pi Day (3.14) to all
=)
Celebrate with some circles, especially if they happen to have a golden
flaky crust and delicious fruit filling.
A new feature of this journal that I just decided to name:
Rachel's Stuck In The Head Song Of The Day!
3/14 : "Theme From Shaft" by Isaac Hayes
You will recall I mentioned Queens of the Stone Age the other
day too. Definitely more to come. If
you find you have a song stuck in your head send it in and I
will post it, after I successfully get it stuck myself, of
course.
Today is March 15. I have completed day two of a
five-day run at
the deli which leads up to the California trip. I am making Ryann (the
bride-to-be) a custom doll. The custom dollmaking thing is a hobby I
have been learning about on the www. Leni is a Strawberry Shortcake
collector in Australia who also has many custom-made dolls
displayed on her SSC site. Other artists have made custom dolls for
movie or tv characters. I decided to make one for Ryann. I started with
a Lisa Frank "Lisa" doll and a Barbie wedding dress and went from there!
I'm making a box for it too, well, using the Lisa doll's box. I chose
the Lisa doll because she has pretty red hair just like Ry. The reason I
started learning about custom dolls in the first place is because I was
trying to get more info on the SSC dolls from Brazil. There are 2
Brazillian dolls that feature PINEAPPLE! Which is awesome because none
of the US dolls were pineapple anything =(. SO eventually I might try to
get a Brazil Pineapple Strawberry Shortcake doll, or get talented enough
to make my own custom one.
Oh yeah, PS the store music is back to Awesome 80's. SCORE! Today I
heard some great stuff from Cheap Trick, Journey, Whitesnake, Billy Idol,
B-52's, etc, etc, etc!!

3/25: "Like a Virgin" by Madonna AND the guy from Moulin Rouge. again

Today is March 26. Sorry for lack of updates but despite being in a
major metropolitan area for four days, I didn't have any internet
access. So here's a rundown of the days I missed.
March 16 - 18: Normal days at work. Probably some funny stuff
happened but I don't remember. Also I worked on Ryann's doll and I made
a present for Gehan too. It's a metal frame I covered with fake leather,
then inside it is the chorus from the Stevie song "Leather and Lace,"
accented by some big lace. He told me once that L&L was a special tune
for him and Ry, so I made him a picture of it.
March 19: Worked in the morning. Got news that Denver snowstorm
was seriously going to screw with our travel plans. Spent breaks trying
to get through to United. Got frustrated, decided to let Chris handle
it. After work, I scurried down to Blair and consulted with Chris via
cellphone as he got our flight rescheduled. We were supposed to go
to Oakland but for rescheduling they could only get us through San
Francisco.
March 20: Since we couldn't get our flight rescheduled for
Thursday, we spent the day in Blair. We played a LOT of Animal Crossing,
and visited some stores in Blair. Then my cell phone got all messed up
so we had to go to a Verizon store in Omaha to have them flash it. Now I
have nationwide coverage, woo!
March 21: We woke up at 4 AM and traveled to Eppley Airfield. On
the way, we stopped to get gas, and got coupons for cheap parking. Then
we flew to Chicago, ate Pizzeria Uno pizza, and then went to San
Francicso. Once we got there, we got our rental car and slowly worked
our way over to our hotel in Oakland. Once we had our bearings, we ate
some lunch at Jack in the Box, and tromped around in the Berkeley
campustown. I got some records at Amoeba. Next
was the rehearsal + rehearsal dinner. We sort of
missed the church the first time we drove by it. We met many of Gehan's
family.
March 22: In the morning we walked around Oakland, then we watched
some hockey. Then came the wedding, which was fairly short, followed by
the party. It was fun; great food and booze, decent music, and hilarious
people to watch. I'm speaking of Gehan's uncle Jimmy. He's an older
Chinese man, rather short and bent over to boot. He had his tie tucked
into his pants, and he danced to darn near every song. He even started a
bizarre conga line to "Safety Dance" for some reason! Aunt Carol danced
with him, which of course embarassed Crystal (her daughter) to no end.
March 23: Today we had breakfast with Ryann and Gehan and a bunch
of family and a few friends (that were in the wedding party). It was
yummy. Then we drove through SF, over the Golden Gate bridge, and up
into Wine Country. We tasted some cheese in Sonoma. Then we drove some
more, on a winding road through the mountains/hills/whatever. Finally we
made it to Highway 1. We drove down 1, enjoying views of
not-quite-the-Pacific. Eventually we did make it to the REAL ocean, so
we stopped and took a few steps in. After that, we continued driving and
watched the sun set. We went back over the Golden Gate bridge, and
through Chinatown a little bit. We saw a Cable Car filled with people.
Also we saw the TransAmerica building, well the bottom of it anyway.
Finally, we went back to Alameda and had leftovers and heavy conversation
with some conservative uncles.
March 24: Today I learned that you can't just follow the signs.
And
traffic on the Bay Bridge sucks at 8 am. All told, we got lost twice and
didn't get to the airport until 9:45 (when our flight left at 10 am).
For a fee, they were happy to be...putting us on another flight at
12:00. (speaking of AC/DC, we learned that they are the favorite band of
Marshall (Ryann's big bro)). So we did eventually make it home, just
later than we planned.
March 25: Drove home from Blair, went to class, watched
"Everything you wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask." Funny
stuff.
Today is March 28. I think I was mentioning this the other
day.
"Clocks" by Coldplay is a kickass song!
New theory: assessing a classmate's coolness by references to Futurama
more random thoughts as they occur to me in 483 lab
Today is March 30. Saturday, I worked in the morning, got off an hour
early, and then jetted to Sioux City. Chris and I went to see Tori at the Orpheum. It was a really
beautiful show. Chris is a huge fan of hers, he has several albums and
I think a boot of a show or two. I, on the other hand, have only heard a
few songs, but through my vast general knowledge I know the names of all
the albums and stuff. I thought she gave a wonderful performance. She
wore a silver tunic thing with big sleeves that, combined with the
obvious piano connection, gave a
very Wakeman-esque image =)
Then we drove home and we got back to Ames about 1:45 in the morning!
We tried to get some sleep so I could go to work today. Andy called at
6:20 and woke me up so I went in then. Now I'm sooooo tired but I'm
going to sleep as soon as I finish this. Oh yeah, the opening guy for
Tori was called Rhett
Miller. When he sang and played his guitar, he looked like an Indie
Rocker as concieved by Jim Henson's Muppets. Something about the way he
moved, reminded me of Muppets dancing. I dunno.
