Looking for a place to live for Fall?

Today is May 1. I am dumb. I'm trying to make a nice pink-related color scheme for Grandma Hazel, since her birthday is May 5. Sadly, the Freaks and Geeks banner clashed horribly with the pinks, so it had to be removed. But you should still go vote for it on DVD if you haven't already. I'm officially done with one class, HDFS 270. I was glad to take it, but I'm also very glad to be done because I don't think I could stand any more lectures with that non-listening egomaniac.

I still have quite a few things to do before the end of the semester. Matt informed me of the new iPods that were announced yesterday. They're pretty cool. I got the software update that was posted too, but I still can't play solitaire. I think for the new ones you have to have OS X anyway. Larry would freak if I tried to give him OS X, I think.

Today is May 2. Now that I handed in some random junk for 483, I consider myself DONE with that class too. And I just took a Cpr E 308 test and quiz thing, leaving me with just another quiz during our finals time. (Except I don't know what the topics for it will be) Right now, according to the grading scale, I'm getting a D in the class which is way scary. Hopefully the stuff I did today (which included turning in a lab that I previously had a zero for) will help. I would feel miserable if I had to take that class over again.

On the plus side, we're going to demo our Com Sci 309 project in about half an hour, and I think that will go well. With a little luck, my "good" grades (HDFS, COM S) should balance out my "bad" or "potentially devastating" grades (both my CPR E classes). Yeah. I made this for a whimsical Rachel-influenced contribution to Groovie Movies.

Today is May 4. I just had an idea that is so brilliant that I had to turn on my computer and come journal about it. When they make driver's licenses, they should put the "weight" in the lower right-hand corner so you can put your thumb over it when you show someone your ID. Keep it far away from the birthdate, so they can still read that and give you your booze.

Stuck in the head song of the day: "Comfort Eagle" by Cake. Submitted by Chris Storms. Very cool tune. We are now accepting offers for these pendant keychains. If you consult the April page, you will see that it's a sticky little song that has been with Chris for some time now.

Today is May 13. Well finals week for spring 2003 has come and gone. And may I say I'm really glad to be done with school for another year. On Wednesday, after my last exam, I drove to Blair and visited Chris. Mostly we just hung out. Thursday I bummed around and then we went to an art gallery/store/open house thing. It was pretty fun.

Then on Friday I ventured to Omaha. It was the first time I'd driven there without Chris so I was a little nervous. I used some online map service but still ended up getting misdirected a couple times. I wouldn't say 'lost' since I knew where I was, I just couldn't find where I needed to go. Suffice it to say, I was relieved to have the Rand McNally Omaha map still in the car. I saw the movie A Mighty Wind at a 24-plex theater. It was funny, not as good as Best In Show but still a good time. It's playing at the Varsity here in Ames now, so maybe I'll go check it out again, especially since I missed the very beginning. After the movie, I went to Westroads mall and bought some stuff, including cute pink-and-black Vans.

I had to work Saturday morning, so we drove back to Ames on Friday afternoon. I worked Saturday and Sunday, and now I don't have to work anymore at Hy-Vee for awhile! Because I'm going to be doing research with Dr. Tuttle, in conjunction with Micron. Sunday afternoon, we watched some OZ episodes, then Chris went back to Blair.

Monday I slept in, played Animal Crossing, learned 2 new songs on guitar ( "Heat of the Moment" by Asia and "Your Love" by The Outfield). So maybe I'll make a little recording of myself playing the chords and singin' "Josie's on a vacation far away..." Also I took one long walk and one short walk. The long walk was from my house, down Ash to Lincoln Way, west to Hyland, and back home. The short walk was to the post office, to return the Six Feet Under disc that I watched in between the 2 walks ;-) I saw the Marilyn Manson ep of VH1's "Driven" and was amused to see a photograph of Brian in a Rush t-shirt.

Today I played Animal Crossing, played the above 2 songs and learned "Amanda" by Boston. Then I ran some errands around town. I bought a CD of Dio which is really rockin'. Holy Diver kicks angle-side-side. I was going to update earlier today but I couldn't log in to isua.iastate.edu so that put the kibosh on that. I'm watching another DVD (Sailor Moon episodes) which I will finish soon and walk to the post office to return.

Today is May 15. Happy Birthday Kim Hunter, one of my good pals. Haydle Rachaway got some bad grades. 2 bad grades, to be exact. In the classes that are supposed to be my major! Oh man this really sucks.
In other news, Rhino Records has released the first 4 Yes albums in "expanded and remastered" versions. (That would be Yes, Time and a Word, The Yes Album, and Fragile) I'm debating whether to pick them up or not. They have all 4 at the Best Buy here in Ames.

Today is May 19. So much to talk about. Friday in Animal Crossing I got the pineapple bed. Completely legit, too. It was for sale in the store. It really is beautiful. The headboard is the leaves, the bedskirt/dust ruffle is the brown outside, and the sheets are the light yellow inside. Also on Friday I got 2 bras from Victoria's. The lady that measured me and helped me was so nice. She treated me with a lot of respect, which I appreciate. Even though lots of stuff they have at VS doesn't even come in my size, the stuff that does is the good stuff

On Saturday, we finally made it to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. Among the first things we saw were a farm (aka "Dairy World") and a carousel. In a moment of "comedy gold" I complained that I didn't come all this way just to see a farm and a damn carousel, since I could do that in good ol' Story City. But on the farm there were cute giant rabbits, so I felt a little better. Then we saw some otters swimming and having fun. One really cool thing was a bridge over a lake full of carp/koi (I'm not sure which, but they're the big fish in orange, black, and white). People stood on the bridge and fed the fish popcorn. The fish swarmed and went completely nuts. At time they were so exuberant in their pursuit of popcorn, it looked like a fish mosh pit with fish body passing. Throughout the course of the zoo we also saw peafowl (including a male displaying his big plumage) prairie dogs, monkeys of various kinds, elephants, rhinos, sea lions (shout-out to Ryann & Gehan's neice Eleanor), giraffes, penguins (indoor and outdoor) sharks, jellyfish, hippos, tapirs, snakes, bears (polar, grizzly, and sun) tigers, leopards, lions, and much more. The whole zoo was so amazing! My only complaint is bad parents who let their kids throw food/objects at animals. Boo! But on the plus side there were many mixed race couples and some really cute biracial kids. It seems like ppl in Omaha are pretty openminded about race issues and that makes me happy since it's not really like that here. Oh yeah and at the end of the day we were trying to find the bathroom and the closest one was in Dairy World. So we went back there, and then I wanted to say goodbye to the rabbits. When I got to their barn I saw some small baby goats and people standing around...apparently a mama goat had just given birth to 3 babies a couple hours before! So that was kinda neat.

On Sunday we went to The Matrix Reloaded. I liked it, and I was entertained, but that doesn't mean I didn't find tons of stuff to make fun of. Such as the big dance scene. It's like "How the Grinch Stole the Rave," where the Grinch tries to stop ravers by taking away their colors, but they dance anyway ("They dance without glowsticks! They dance without big pants! They dance without pacifiers and bracelets and hats!") And those twin badguys....the writers were like "I want evil twins like Milli Vanilli" and the other was like "No, I want evil twins like Matthew and Gunnar Nelson" so they compromised by having evil twins with long WHITE dreads.
But like I say, I did enjoy the movie. The seXX0r was nice, and of course you can't go wrong with AUGUSTUS HILL as your operator. Plus the car chase scene was kewl since it was filmed in Alameda, CA.

Then when we got home from Omaha, one of Chris's neighbors started hassling us so I called the cops on her. Because in situations like that whether it's sexual harassment, bullying, solicitors, you're not going to get anywhere unless you keep records of everything that happens. Hopefully she'll leave us alone, but if not at least we've gone through the proper channels about it.

Today is May 21. Lately my roomie and I have been playing SSX Tricky on Chris's GameCube. I think it's fun. I enjoy making progress and unlocking the different items like riders, outfits, boards, mountains. Although I may have to invest in another controller so Alicia and I can race it up!

Alicia and I also went to the movie Old School. If your town has a discount theater, it might still be playing. We saw it at the North Grand 5, which is normally a dollar but on Wednesdays (and the first show everyday) is only 50 cents. It was funny, I liked the characters. Jeremy Piven plays "a crusty old dean" which is even funnier if you've seen him in PCU, where HE plays kinda the guy-that-won't-grow-up and still in college. I just finished watching X-Men, so that I could see X2 and have some concept of what was going on. Tomorrow I have my first meeting with Dr. Tuttle for the summer research. Then on Friday, Ryann and Gehan come and I am 'sponsible for picking them up at Des Moines International. Woo!

Today is May 23. Yesterday's meeting went fine. I'm going to work out in the Applied Sciences Complex testing some transistors. First order of business is to re-organize the lab setup. Which is cool; I get into that kinda thing.
"Drummers are weird people" -- Ozzy Osbourne
I would like to call myself a drummer. But since I mostly just play mallets, I think the following is a more apropos quote for me:
"This is not what I really do, okay? I play keyboards." -- Pool Salesman, The Simpsons

So send me any funny quotes you may have about mallet players or mallet instruments in general.

later Ok, in my quest for mallet percussion jokes so far I have only found something about cutting up a double bass and making it into a xylophone. But I found an actually funny saxophone joke (you could apply it to clarinet too) It's the fourth one on this list.

Today is May 26. Yesterday I was reading Entertainment Weekly and I learned that Homicide: Life On The Street is coming out on DVD. I haven't hyperventilated this much since last April 30th when I found out Rush were coming to Ames. You can buy the 4-disc set at a variety of places. I'm really looking forward to seeing the series from the beginning, as I didn't start watching it until the Kellerman days (brief reverie to remember the Kellerman days).

On Sunday there was the party for R&G at Curt and Carol's. My dad came, which was monumental. He finally gave up on them (the fam in general) apologizing, so he decided to go and just have a good time. I played with Trace's youngest daughter Sari, who is pretty cool for a four-year-old. I had purple polish on my toenails, and orange on my fingernails, and she seemed to get a kick out of that. She's good at counting too.

Today is May 29. I have been nominated for a prestigious award that exists solely in my mind. If I am fortunate enough to win, I will create a graphic for this award and post it here. (Even though the award itself exists solely in my mind, I believe it could be represented in .gif mode.

I have now completed the first season of Six Feet Under, courtesy of Netflix. I have really enjoyed it so far. I'm honestly surprised that so many people like it, that it's "popular." Because from some angles it seems like one of those shows that would be "acclaimed" but cancelled very quickly due to low ratings. So hopefully soon the next season will be released before I read too many spoilers.

Right now, I'm at work in the ASC, waiting to use a work area. I'm cranky because I've been cranky all week since I'm used to staying at home playing video games instead of going to work. But once those dudes get outta my way I can do something maybe!
