Today is June 1. I'm pretty sure I would be lit on fire by those What Not
To Wear
guys. Lit on fiiiiire! (I'm probably safe, though: it seems they only
have
one type of person on there which is "person with fairly 'good' body
hidden under
'bad'
clothes." Like the girl says to them, "You have these gorgeous legs, show
'em off!")
Due to my massive ego, though, I would probably brave the burnination to
get people
to pay attention to me and fuss over me and all. It's kind of fun to
daydream about
what kinds of tips they might give me, or what kind of scars I would give
them when
they tried to take away my tshirts from 1995 or my Stevie Nicks
skirts/tops =) In closing, I look
good in red.
Today is June 3. Crap, I gotta pay our rent. Right now, I'm watching a
disc of Friends. And I would like to present: Reasons I want to learn
perl.
Make the Taurus Club site better. Currently, it sucks.
I made it
so the form gets sent to an old Yahoo account that I never check. So it
never gets
updated. I want to write a way to automate the site so the updates show
up on their
own. Less involvement for me, more fun for the members.
A web update tool for this blog Ever since AIT changed the security
for the
servers, I can only telnet from computers with the kerberos login thing.
If I can
get file reading/writing down, I think I can make a little form for myself
so I can
update this page o'crap from anywhere with an internet connection
=)
Today is June 7. Here's a little entry about RWR. My
thoughts
mainly come from that sublime satire, Bloom County. That strip had a
character
called Ronald-Ann. Like me, whe was born the night Reagan was elected.
Also there
was a Sunday strip where the characters were really irate and fed up with
Reagan's
policies. Then someone pointed out....but he's so nice! A peach! (and
then)
"Impeach the peach!" [a scan later if I can wrangle it]. I think that
pretty much
sums him up for me. I am somewhat bitter that we lost him to the
conservative side
during the "red scare" of the 50s. When I think of Reagan's 1980's I
think of
homeless people in soup kitchens, the AIDS quilt stretching for hundreds
of yards,
and intricate, complicated multinational scandals. But when I think of
him as a guy,
I think of the grandpa who was president during my entire childhood, a
radio
personality from Des Moines's own WHO, and a great speaker. I also think
of Nancy
Reagan, who suffered the fate of all strong, public women. During her
husband's time
in office she was seen only as a domineering shrew (same brush later used
to paint
HRC). Now that she has been out of the spotlight she can be seen as a
devoted
caretaker and Alzheimer's advocate. Of course this is still a one-sided
portrayal
because people are unable or unwilling to let a woman have a
multi-dimensional
personality, but at least she has been vindicated somewhat.
Today is June 10. Yesterday was a primary election for StoCo. In my
district, the
lady I voted for came in 2nd, but I think the other lady is pretty good
too. Also my
pal Erik lost his primary =( but it was cool that he went for it though.
In GOOD
NEWS, a rabidly anti-gay state senator from Orange City lost
the Republican primary in
a district in NW Iowa. This new guy will most likely go on to win in Nov,
because
Dems don't stand much of a chance in a place where "western Iowa values"
reign
supreme, but at least we know voters in that district care a little more
about the
issues than they do about homophobia run rampant in the statehouse.
Today is June 14. Worked 5 days last week, didn't get 40 hrs though b/c I
got sent
home early on Tues due to extra ppl in the deli. This week? Back to 3
days, 24 hrs.
So I have set some goals for myself. Pack some boxes (no, no job yet,
just that I
have to be out of here by August 1 regardless), apply for said elusive
jobs, write
out thank-you cards. Oh yeah, and do some laundry, before Friday. I
don't really
need socks in my daily summer life, but for work, yes. Right now, I'm
eating a
banana, listening to Jill's
birthday mix cd, and assembling the proper cards and envelopes and
addresses
necessary to thank it up.
Today is June 16. In honor of my Grandma
Rose my blog will now present some Nice Things about her.
- She really loved to recall humorous things said by young children,
especially
us grandkids. Even if she added speech impediments to make the child seem
cuter, she
could still tell a good story.
- She also enjoyed humorous commercials, mostly ones with children.
Probably for
the above reason.
- She was really good at all things domestic. She liked to knit and
crochet, and
she made the best chocolate brownies. And peanut butter balls. And Chex
mix. Well
she just made a lot of really good things to eat. She also helped me do
some craft
projects, and even started one of the legs on my knitted octopus for me.
(This was
before I knew how to cast on) You can tell which leg is hers because she
had a
pretty tight knitting style, so her leg is the smallest. But that means I
will
remember it.
- Along with Grandpa Harold, she liked to take us fishing. I think
Jonno and I are
really lucky that we got to grow up while they were still active and could
do more
things with us. Also it's cool that she liked fishing which is kind of a
"guy
thing."
- She once told me I looked like I had really "stretched out" (as in
gotten taller
and thinner). To a chubby kid, that means a lot.
- We had a good "deep" conversation once a few years ago when I was
floating in the
North Park Villa pool. I asked her all about what it was like going
through nurses'
training and being a nurse
- She was a graduate of Story City High School!
- She loved to play golf, and was always trying to get us interested in
the game.
Luckily it "took" with Jonathan and they played many rounds together.
Even though I
could have (seemed to) cared less, she still took me to the driving range
at Veenker
and we had a pretty good time hitting some balls
So, yeah, that's my grandma. Even though I may do more stuff with Grandma
Hazel and
feel closer to her, I still loved Grandma Rose and will treasure the good
times we
had together.
Today is June 22. The other day, I heard a radio ad for some company that
jacks up
your basement walls when they are leaning or something. And the ad
included a line
about how ignoring the problem would only make it worse. And I started to
think,
duh, all problems are that way. So I challenged myself to think up some
problems
that get better by ignoring them.
-
Bees. If bees are around you, you should ignore them until they fly away.
unless bees are trying to steal your car, then you need to
act fast
- Kids saying swear words. If a kid swears and you laugh, they will do
it again.
If they swear and you don't laugh, they'll probably do it until they find
an adult
that *does* laugh
- Bullies. Although in retrospect, "ignoring" would probably work a lot
better if
it wasn't always accompoanied by crying
So those are some good ones. Feel free to
add your own
Today is June 26. You know what I really love? How I'm good enough to be
invited to
some people's wedding SHOWER, good enough to get them a gift, but not good
enough to
be invited to the actual wedding. Yeah. That's great. Maybe she found
out how
little I spent on the gift (it was on clearance) when she tried to
exchange it at
Target, and decided not to invite me. I suppose I should have seen it
coming when I
got a thank-you card from one and not the other (it was a 2 girl shower).
Although I
guess it could be worse...
Etiquette Hell
Today is June 29. Yesterday after work I CRASHED, thus sleeping through a
party I
was supposed to go to. I've been awake since around 2:30 today, doing and
watching
various things. Right now, it's about 4 am and there is some kind of
weird-ass
karaoke thing going on in 2310 Mortensen. Earlier they were doing G'n'R's
Sweet
Child O'Mine and now Let Her Cry by H and the BF.
Today a new Rush album comes out which as far as I can tell is composed of
cover
tunes. Looking forward to: Summertime Blues, just to see if my fav band
can touch
the Blue Cheer version. Also goin gto invite grandma Hazel over to help
me do a
"Keep and Toss" on all the crap in this apt, and also eat sloppy joes.
