I Can't Eat Spaghetti
mood:   numb
Today is June 1. Sunday night Dad, Grandpa and I went to Cafe Northwest. CI had spaghetti which I managed to spill a number of times on my shirt. Then when I was eating the leftovers (it was a huge portion) I dropped a strand on the carpet. Boo.

I'm working the late shift today so this morning I watched The Woman Who Loved Elvis, part of my random plan to watch all my movies that start with "The" that are in my queue. I think I caught part of it on TV back when I lived at Mortensen and added it. Man if you didn't hate welfare cheats before this movie you totally will afterwards. Plus it continues the media bias against social workers. Aside from the characters being kind of irritating, the dialogue comes clunking out of their mouths. I noticed during the opening credits that it was based on a book, and lots of the quotes seemed like they would make more sense on the page.

Well I suppose I should take my shower and get ready for work. Color change later when I get a chance.

Everybody's Got A Little Light Under The Sun
mood:   happy
Today is June 5. I guess the month is going pretty well so far. I've had that song "Flashlight" stuck in my head all day, hence the title. Short day at work, cutting off 2 hours because of having a meeting on Thursday. Last night Dad and I went down to Knoxville but there was a tornado warning so they had to call off the races. We got our tickets for Nationals (woo!) and then had a great dinner at Udders Restaurant.

The predating thing went well I guess. Of course I had the over-analyzing every thing I said afterwards. I hung around after the organized part and we sat out on the patio and got bit by skeeters.

Right now I'm drying towels on the balcony again and kitty and I are watching QaF. I think a bug is in here and it's making him angry. Tomorrow I have the day off which should be cool. Probably do more laundry, go to counseling, and then go see Jay play ball.

Toons and more
mood:   calm
Today is June 13. Right now I'm watching a disc of Looney Tunes shorts from Netflix. I rented it because I think it has a Pussyfoot/Marc Anthony toon on there. You know the little kitty? My favorite one is still where the kitty goes to the construction site. And the bulldog has to keep rescuing her.

So starting tomorrow it is the good part of the 3-week rotating schedule. 2 days off, close thursday, be the 3rd man on Friday, then 2 days off. Very do-able. I have a few things planned for the days off. I think they're all in the iCal so I can keep them organizized.

Since I got on the reading kick with the Homicide book, I picked up a few more items at the WDM Lib.
  • Sound Of The Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal. It's pretty interesting. It has some good quotes from the real people.
  • Heavy Metal: The Music And Its Culture. Now this one I had heard about for awhile. It is actually a pretty dry read although there is an interesting anecdote where she inadvertantly exposes some Rush fans as idiots. She was at a Rush show in 82 and asked the fans hanging out before the concert if in "2112" Rush was Con the side of the priests or the guy who finds the waterfall guitar. It says like 70% chose the priests. Talk about missing the point! The purpose of this anecdote was to show that fans don't always care about or process the lyrics. Not necessarily using that as the main argument, but the book also does a good job of tearing down the "metal will damage our children" argument. I still can't believe record labels are forced to put stickers on albums. It's sickening. Tipper Gore is awful for starting that whole crusade. When Fleetwood Mac performed for the Clinton Inaugural maybe Stevie should have done something witchy to her (since all those anti-rock-music christians loved to say Stevie was supporting witchcraft with her songs).
  • Based on a True Story: Fact and Fantasy in 100 Favorite Movies. This book is very cool. You can learn a lot of interesting facts and see how some movies are very true and some are embellished beyond belief to serve the dirctor or writer's agenda. Plus it introduced me to some movies I had never heard of before and now might want to watch.
  • lber
  • Also I got a CD of Erasure because of Scrubs. The only song of theirs I really knew before was "Chains of Love" but I think I like "A Little Respect" even better.
Oh another item real quick - I guess Tom was in the store a week ago yesterday. That was the Sunday I had a short shift so I was not there. I guess its doubtful if I would have recognized him, and if so what would I have said. "Hey, I enjoy reading your blog"? That would be strange. For the record, I found polyfro.com becuase I was trying to find the correlation between Strong Bad and Journey back in January, and kept reading since then since he's pretty dang funny.

Sing Out, Louise!
mood:   relaxed
Today is June 19. I'm watching Gypsy, the 1962 movie version. Did I rent it entirely because of Arrested Development? Yes, yes I did. "Mama's movin' on, mama's all alone, mama doesn't care." Lucille popping balloons. She so rules.

So it has been a busy time of Actually Doing Stuff. Friday tried going out but I ended up getting all flummoxed due to a lot of people and loud noises. Then I got minor food poisoning from the normal restaurant we finally decided to eat at, so I didn't have much fun for the rest of the night.

Saturday was a good day. I headed up to Story City for the Habitat charity walk. We (David, Jess, and I) didn't really do the actual route but just walked around Story City and chatted and stuff. It was pretty fun. Afterwards we went back to Ames to see Jess's new kitty. She is small and black and white but doesn't have a name yet. We spent a nice time hanging out and listening to music. Also we had Taco Time - yum. Saturday night Dad and I went to Knoxville which was super fun. It was the mid-season championships. Lots of action but mostly what I like is just spending time with my dad. I know that probably sounds cheesy but we are pretty much at the point where we can just hang out and have a good time.

As mentioned previously I had Tues and Weds off. Both of those days were pretty busy too. Tuesday had an appointment, watched Louie play baseball, and went out to Trophy's for karaoke. Wednesday met Kim for lunch, saw her new house, and then went to Batman Begins with some work ppls (Molly, Adam, Lawrence & Crystal). So there's this whole running gag with War of the Worlds between me and some of the guys at work. They were watching one of the trailers in the office, and at one point Tom Cruise says "Hey Rachel, you want to see something cool?" I heard this and walked in there, like "what?" Cand they all had a good laugh. Then at Batman I was wondering out loud if they would have that same trailer beforehand. They showed a different one but TC does *yell* RACHELLLLL! at one point. So they were laughin' at me again. Then in BB, Katie Holmes's character is called Rachel, has brown hair, and drives a TAURUS. That was incredibly crazy. A 95-or-older Taurus, that kind of sea green color. In the movie she had it for at least 7 years. I have had mine since April 99 so just over 6 years for me. The weird thing is it kind of pulls you out of the movie, where the time period is sort of vague as far as some things looking old-fashioned and some futuristic. I would say it's the best use of a Taurus in a movie since Road Trip. Other Taurus refs in pop culture include The X-Files and Conan O'Brien. and my old website which is crappy because I never update it and I suck

Good to be teh Rach
mood:   sleepy
Today is June 27. It was a fine 7 day run at work. It seemed to go pretty fast. Saturday I went to Pulp Fiction at the Fleur and that was cool. That movie has so many great lines. Did I drive home afterwards feeling like a badass? Yes, I did. Then on Sunday we had all-store meeting followed by fun times at Champps and the House of Bricks. It's one of those things where afterwards everyone is all "we should do this more often" but then will it actually happen? Shawn was talking about doing the hosting thing again at his place, so that could be cool.

I am actually sleepy for some reason. I guess I am just a napper at heart. Oh yeah! Big shout-out to Jill for the prezzie she sent me. But he was always... TROGDOR! Ripped from the pages of the H*R Livejournal.

A list of fun for you
