Today is July 12th and it's taken me all twelve days to get the
July page going.
This is due to intense laziness on my part. I've been busy, but then
again I've still had enough time to check my e-mail, buy things on eBay,
and play lots of FreeCell!
Independence day was celebrated in the typical fashion in Sheldahl.
Chris and I watched the parade, then had a barbeque with Bill, Lisa,
Louie, and Jay. We played Louie's new (to him =) Nintendo 64, and then
went swimming at the Slater pool.
The next day we drove to Mankato for Megan's wedding. It was a pretty
ceremony, and I met some interesting relatives of Megs's at the
reception. Then Chris and I went hot tubbin' at the Holiday Inn.
After a restful sleep, we drove around Mankato, which is a pretty cool
town, and bought some pineapple stuff at the local antique stores.
On Tuesday (the 9th) Chris and I saw the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"
at the Varsity. I definitely reccomend it. Especially if you enjoyed
John Corbett on Northern Exposure. His character isn't really developed
much, but he plays his role effectively. It's a very charming film; "the
feel good movie ochv tha yeah! (from Germans who say nice things....very
obscure reference from The Dana Carvey Show.)
In other movie news, I bought the Royal Tennenbaums DVD, and tonight
Chris and I are going to the Newton Valle Drive-In theater. I haven't
been to a drive-in in ages, so I'm really looking forward to
experiencing one with Chris =)
Well
I am doing this update from the computer at Hy-Vee, and I need to get
back to work, theoretically. I'm on day 3 of a seven day run!
Ick!
Once again I apologize for the delay in getting this month's page
out.
Today is July 14. Once again I am journaling from the "Dell OptiPlex" in
the Hy-Vee breakroom. I'm using an application called TinyTERM which I
don't really understand.
Last night Chris and I made the trip to the drive-in and it was very
fun. We made the drive in about 45-50 minutes, much better than the 82
minutes Yahoo! Maps suggested. The show was listed to start at 8:45,
which was when we joined the line of cars on County Highway F48. I was
worried that they were going to start turning people away, as it was a
really long line. But we got in and got a good space. The only hassle
was the fact that the ladies' restroom only had one stall ={
The first show was Mr. Deeds,
with Adam Sandler as the modest man from Mandrake (Falls, that is!) I
didn't expect much from this film and so I was pleasantly surprised by
how the story held my attention. Winona is not quite believeable as a
tabloid TV producer, but she still played her "good girl " role very
sweetly. Maybe more of a renter for most people but I liked it. The
next movie was Spider-Man, which Chris and I were seeing for the second
time.
We made it home by about 1:45, and I slept a few precious hours before
coming back into work. Right now, I'm on break, and there's a golf
tournament about to start on TV from Milwaukee. The announcer was
quoting Alice Cooper's comments about the city from Wayne's World.
Easily the most interesting thing I've ever heard a golf announcer say.
Today is July 16. 7 days of work are done! I am at Chris's right now,
tracking a
pineapple lamp I bought from eBay using the UPS web site. My package
has been a bunch of different places, including 3 stops in Texas.
Chris fell off his bike on the way home from class today so he called me
and I came from work and brought him some Hydrogen Peroxide. I used this
to clean his wounds and then I dressed them with antibacterial ointment
and fourteen Band-Aid brand bandages. He has scrapes on his hands (those
are the worst), shoulder, knees, and arm. I was really scared when he
called so I came over as fast as I could from work. This wasn't the best
thing I could have done for the deli but I had to help Chris.
Right now he is ringing a bell we got at Megan's wedding reception which
I guess means we are in a sitcom and I have to go see what he wants, with
comic effect.
Today is July 22. Thursday of
last week (that would be the 18th for
those keeping score at home) Chris and I went to Des Moines and visited
the Science Center and Art Center. The Art Center has some sculptures I
really enjoyed, like a big blue plug-in thing by Claes Oldenberg, blown
glass "stones" by Maya Lin, and the Fibonacci numbers to roughly 1000,
done in blue neon light with a taxidermied lizard above them. (the last
one was hanging on the wall, and you could see it from three floors of
the museum.
Other than that, I have been up to a whole lot of nothing. You should
visit Luke Ski's mp3
page and download "Baby Got Brak" which is of course a parody of Sir
Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." It's all about Space Ghost, Zorak, and Brak
himself. This song was brought to my attention by my friend Tim Lien
from Hy-Vee. Also I want to give a shout out to my friend Dan "III" who
I work with at the deli, but who also works at Hollywood Video and is
quite generous with the free videos. Thanks man!!!
The video he let us rent was "Thunderball," the chronologically fourth
James Bond film. One thing you might not know is that Bond is a total
manwhore. Another thing you might not know is what all the Bond movies
are, what order they were released, and who plays Bond in all of them.
Well I am working on a page that will be a handy reference for the Web.
Today is July 25. It's a Beastie Day. I was listening to
"License to
Ill" on the way in to Ames today. (So that goes with the Bond theme as
well, hehe) This is a record that makes you want to put on your big
pants, strap on your headphones, and strut around town. Or at least
that's what it does for me. My favorite song on the album is "The New
Style," probably because I can sing/rap along with most of it.
Plans for The Big Move continue unabated. I cut two checks for RGN and
Alicia, have purchased bedding for the new bed, and today we're going to
get the adapters for the hi-speed internet. I'm moving in to one of the
Country Club Apartment buildings, and Chris is moving in to another.
(I'm not sure if there are more than two that share the name Country
Club).
Today is July 26. I asked Chris if he
would want to have a bachelor
party. He was somewhat ambivalent about the idea, but added that "It
would be fun to see my friends get loaded, all in my honor. Then I could
order them around, like 'Dance for me, boy!'"
Finally saw the first Batman movie (ya know the one with Michael Keaton,
Kim Basinger
and Jack Nicholson). I was very impressed. It was not cheesy at all and
it really held my attention. The only thing I remember about it from my
youth was that it was the first film where I was really aware of the
merchandising that went along with it, well either that one or Dick
Tracy. It seemed *everything* that summer (1989) had a bat logo on it!!
Today is July 31. Trip to Minneapolis went very well! Some highlights:
- Korn show was a very good time.
Opening band Deadsy played a farily cool cover of "Tom Sawyer." I sat
there like....this drummer gets to pretend he's Neil Peart every night in
front of thousands of people!! Then the next band was Puddle of
Mudd....they were okay but when I heard their radio songs I just thought
"Oh. That's PoM, I thought it was Linkin Park or Staind or whatever."
The only cool thing about those guys was their bass player, who spit on
some fans in the audience that were giving him a hard time.
In between sets some girls showed their boobs (to wild applause) and 2 up
on their boyfriends' shoulders made out (to insane, thunderous
applause). Chris and I visited with the people next to us; they were
from Minnetonka and very friendly.
Then Korn themselves came out and it was a rockin' good time. Jon Davis
is just a nut. He wore a black wife-beater and a floor-length cargo
skirt. The music was very intense and the crowd really got into it.
Probably my favorite song was "Freak on a Leash" but the songs I wasn't
that familiar with were really good too. For the encore, Jon donned his
kilt and wailed on the bagpipes to introduce "Shoots and Ladders." Then
at the very end the audience was showered with big chunks of silvery glitter.
- Our hotel was in a super location, we just hopped on the interstate
and drove right in to the Target center (parking ramp that is). Also
they gave us yummy continental breakfast. I even made Chris a waffle
using the waffle maker like the one we have at work.
- We went to the Mega Mall
and shopped til we dropped! Like 5.5 hours. Seriously. Chris and I
even
got our caricature done. We were considering it, and talking about
what we would want on our t-shirts in the picture. Then we noticed a
t-shirt stand nearby and it had a transformers shirt on it! So that was
The Sign that we were meant to have our caricature drawn. The picture
turned out really well.
Also of note at the Mall of Am. was the Mac Store. I screamed and ran across the
aisle just to get in there. I even was able to sign on to AIM...it was
so exciting! They have some big-ass monitors in there.
Then that night we saw Austin Powers in Goldmember and it was really
funny. I laughed many times, and especially enjoyed the music/dancing parts.
