Buy the iPod killer. Seriously; I don't care
mood:   awake
Today is July 22. There is a website I have in my bookmarks called 'Customers Suck". I used to read it a lot, but now I hardly ever do. Actually I have mostly had nice customers recently so maybe that's why I don't really read it anymore ;-) But tonight we was bored so I checked out a few recent entries. For some reason this one (which I have framegrabbed for you) made me laugh out loud. The old-fashioned way, where you had to type it out and not just use its initials.

It's funny all on its own, but it's even funnier in the context of Strong Bad saying customer needs assistance in e-mail. (For more FAX-related humor, check out the last item in this list, or just hang out with me at work, when I try to send out documentation to help a customer resolve a dispute with an online money place, but instead send them the *back* of the paper that has only the repair terms and conditions, but not my well-crafted letter.

Meredith Wilson's How To Be A Player
mood:   busy
Today is July 20. I am totally watching The Music Man. Mostly I just wanted to watch the "Rock Island" train song, but then I decided I should just enjoy the rest of it too. Harold Hill totally plays that town, which I suppose goes along with the 'music' theme. He manipulates everybody, and even gets an icy pre-"Grandma's Boy" Shirley Jones to fall for his nonsense. She even quasi-ho's it up with an anvil salesman to keep him from ruining Harold Hill's plan.

Check out Natalie Dee today. I like the ears on that squirrelly. For someone who hates cats, at least she likes some other things that I like.

You guys, seriously, I'm a sorcerer

Today is July 19. Got some excellent news in my flea-mail today. First off, my brother has been accepted at med school!! The University of Toledo Health Science Campus to be exact. I'm not 100% sure, but I think he told me that someplace in Ohio was his #1 choice, so if that is true this is very exciting indeed. I found all this out through an email from Dad but I can't wait to talk to my bro-bro all about it.

The other big news: a new addition to our family. My cousin Ryann had her baby, a little boy called Nathaniel. New grandpa Doug has already sent out some pics! Congrats to Ryann and proud papa Gehan, and to everyone else in the extended fam: please be careful. (Occasionally in my family when a new baby is born, it means someone else has just died or is going to die. Probably just a coincidence, but still) Tonight after work I'm dropping my car off at Quality Ford (Where our deals are real....and our website has an irritating loud flash intro.....) to have my A/C looked at. Currently it is not so much an air conditioner as a hot-air-putter-outer unless you're doing at least 55. Now those of you who know we know I am *generally* doing at least 55, but still there are those pesky stoplights on S. 74th St. to contend with. My plan is to drop it off and then hoof it up Office Park, be car-less for most of Thurs, and wait for their call. As long as they can finish by Fri at noon, I'll be golden.

A busy day off
mood:   tired
Today is July 17. Dude what is up with this "only blog every week" nonsense? ::Shrugs:: As many of you know, when I have a day off I mostly like to do nothing. Today I actually did quite a few things. It actually began with an HBO-packed evening at Grandpa's. After work I scooted up to Ames and watched "Deadwood," "Entourage," and "Lucky Louie" with Dad and Gpa. Deadwood is pretty cool but I never know what is going on. (I have finally put season 1 in my queue so I can watch it and try to appreciate it better. Plus then me and Dad can have in-depth conversations about it like we do with Curb. Who says parents and kids don't communicate???) Entourage was Ok, funny, and that guy from Drive Me Crazy has CRAZY blue eyes. Lucky Louie I was not expecting to like but I actually laughed out loud quite a few times. Dad mentioned that the one we watched was one of the weaker ones, so maybe it has promise after all.

Dad and I went home and watched an old-ish Larry Miller standup special Dad had taped off HBO. The year is actually 1992, not 2k1 as imdb claims. The material isn't "dated" except for one reference to Schwartzkopf, and the fact that the captions are copyright 1992. Yes, my dad likes captions too ;-)

Monday AM I woke up and did some computering with Dad. He's the proud owner of Swoop for the past 6mos+, and they are getting along well. He let me borrow some Loggins and Messina albums, including the yacht-rockingest-cover-ever Full Sail. Then it was off to Ames where I did some banking and then met Jessica for lunch at the Mandarin. She showed me 2 medals she won at the IA Games in TKD! Way to go Jesh!!

I spent my afternoon watching Netflix. I watched the special features on the Friends disc (2 of the eps with commentary from the producers, not too exciting but one was the ever-popular The One With The Embryos) The other disc at home was a movie called Chain of Fools. I quite liked it! It had a great cast (Steve Zahn, **Crossy**, Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek, Jeff Goldblum, even my cat-as-human Michael Rappaport.) Honestly if you are a fan of David Cross you have no reason for not watching this movie. He steals the show in my opinion.

After the movie I was debating what to do. I didn't have quite enough time to make the 7:05 Wordplay so I elected to do some laundry and watch the Lewis Black tape my dad had sent along with me. Soooooo friggin hilarious. I managed to make it over to the Fleur in time for the 9:30 xword movie, only to be told by a handwritten sign at the counter that they would not be showing it that night! I was a little bummed but then the guy said I could just go to "any movie" for free. How weird. I don't get free stuff like that too often so I went to see The Devil Wears Prada. (I did buy a snack from their concession counter so I wasn't a total leech). I'ma try to go back tomorrow after work and fulfill my puzzle destiny. I think Strangers mit Candy opens there on Friday so lord knows I'll be back for that too =)

After the movie I bought myself some groceries. I had planned this since I knew there was a Hy-Vee near the theater (me and Shannon bought candy there before a movie once...shhhhhh) and plus it would be cooler in the late eve. It was as pleasant experience since the store was mostly empty, the only neg. being that i didn't know where some of the items were since I had never really 'shopped' there before. But I got home and put everything away, and now I shall be off to bed. More updates as they become avail.

I am stupid (remix)
mood:   indescribable
Today is July 11. My buddy Michelle is back in the North Americas. Today I picked her up as she made her way back to DSM after a good visit with her fam. Her next adventures take her to Chicago and I can only wish her the best of luck! I had never been to the bus station before so that was interesting. There were some Amishish people that got off the bus too. Not sure what they were up to.

So one of my DS games has this magical transformation ability. If you don't play Animal Crossing: Wild World for 3 days it turns into "Hope You Like Watering Flowers, Bitch." So I am working on that. I've got Conan on because Rodrigo is the 2nd guest. (Go on, gay 'im up) I'm guessing he is about fit to spit backstage due to Marlon "Little Man" Wayans being the first guest. Or maybe not, whatever. It would make me REALLY happy if he was making an appearance to plug the DVD release for the TV show of The Comedians of Comedy. For a non-cable-having-individual, that would rule.

Did you click on the Mr. Show skit? It always makes me a little sad to see them cut up like that b/c then you start wishing you could see the one before (Van Hammersly) and after (Downsizing....OK maybe it makes you wish you could see the one after *with* Paul and Jay overdubbing it ;-) OH MY GOD AND THEN I GO AND MAKE IT HAPPEN: Paul and Jay goodness! Oh yeah and while I was looking for Mr. Show clips I found this, just click it, it is a thing of beauty.

later I submitted a pic of the one-and-only Calypso Orange Kitty to the Juice's Pet Gallery Thing. I used the following copy for the question "Why should your pet be in juice?"
He is the ultimate orange cat; a handsome and friendly boy who loves to play and is always good for a cuddle.
I used a pic of him being a smoove pimp in a basket. Hopefully they will recognize the greatness. I also sent in one of the caped boy (not that one, a different one) to Stuff On My Cat. Gah - I'm not turning into a stage mother, you guys ;-)

Hola! Bienvenidos a la pagnia de julio.
mood:   calm
Today is el cinco de Julio. Some people may be wondering, Rachel, how have you spent your vacation. Here is a summary.
  • Saturday I went to the car show with my friend Jess. It was the "Goodguys Rod and Custom Nationals" like you hear about in the loud ads on TV. It was actually really fun! She knows a TON about cars, like how to identify the model year of a particular classic car by a tiny detail. We saw a lot of spectacular paint jobs and humorous rebus license plates. We had a challenge of trying to decipher them. I even learned a little bit....I hope. One of the neatest cars was a metal-flake orange panel truck that was the "Pumpkin Hauler." Also I got a custom sign that says "Taurus parking Only" and has a Ford oval on it.
  • Sunday I mostly hung out with Shannon and watched movies. We went to the video store looking for "Sundance" movies, and basically just walked through the new releases section looking for anything that had those leaves on the DVD box. We ended up with Beyond the Wall of Sleep and Up and Down, as well as I Heart Huckabees. Beyond i thought was going to be scary but was actually horribly, horribly bad. So bad that it was quite enjoyable to make fun of. I believe I would describe it as "Coven, if Mark Borchardt would have watched a shit-ton of MTV." Meaning, it had mostly the same cheap black and white style as Coven (with a long 'o,' because otherwise it sounds like oven and that just doesn't work), but with all these crazy jump cuts. Supposedly the commentary is hilarous too, but I haven't watched that yet. Up and Down was a little better. It was the type of movie where there are a ton of different stories and they all kind of intersect. I quite liked it; even though it didn't have a happy ending, it gave you some interesting characters and a lot to think about. Huckabees we mostly just rented since it was a freebie. I think I got sleepy partway thru and Shannon had to watch the rest alone.
  • Monady I got to see my cousin Louie play baseball. He just turned 14 on July 02, WOW. I remember when he was just a baby. Monday was a hot hot day in central IA.
  • Tuesday was our Independence Day. I went to the festivities in Sheldahl with Bill, Lisa, Louie and Jay. Also I got to see Grandma Hazel. It is funny since they are different sides of the family but it would be weird not to see both on 4th of July. I got a rag rug for Cavan and Scott. (shh it's a surprise!) It was a very pleasant day, sunny but not humid, and with nice breezes. We mostly just sat in the park and enjoyed the program. There was lots of different acts, from solo acoustic guitar, to a family group that sang christian as well as secular songs, a clown/magician/puppetteer lady, a bluegrass ensemble, and a country singer. The family group and the country singer didn't have a backing band, but rather a cd or computer or something with their background music. I told Lisa, "I could do that," and I totally could. Get some karaoke or whatever tapes of Journey, Pat B., Boston, what have you. Get a cool costume. I could entertain the people. I stuck around for the fireworks and we literally had a front-row seat. There was no one in front of us. We could see where they lit 'em off. The explosions were so huge and dramatic in the sky. It would be hard to say what the "best" fireworks I have seen are, but I easily had the best and biggest view of these.
  • Today I recorded and posted 2 more chapters of my audiobook, and then tried to go watch Jay play ball in Altoona. Unfortunately I could not pinpoint the location of his game! I ended up having an enjoyable drive, expoloring different parts of Des Moines after I abandoned my diamond-quest in Altoona. I made it down to Southridge mall and looked around there. I wouldn't say it's a Dead Mall but it is on life support. A couple things they DO have over Jcreek though. First and foremost: KITTIES! The ARL has a location out at the mall where you can look at the cats, and play with them if you are serious. I think they also have educational programs too. There is a little gift shop too, to benefit the shelter. So you could go look at kitties on your break. Another nice amenity at the mall is a change machine in the food court, by the kiddie rides. That would be good for a quarter-hungry person like me. The other thing I thought was cool was that the McD's in their food court claimed to serve breakfast all day! I had never seen that at a fast food place before (other than Sonics) and I think the people sitting by me had the hotcakes, so it must have been true.
So that's the lowdown. Tonight I'm just doing some web stuff, maybe will do another chapter too. Mrow!
