5 Days Working, Time To Be A Bum
mood:    confused
Today is August 1. Swoopy is not pleased with this phone cord jutting out of his side. Today at work we were eating some leftover blintzes from the Bar Mitzvah catering on Saturday. Pretty good. In other news, my friend Brian has a brown mini-lop called Melvin. And he got rained on because Brian slept through the thunderstorm. (My friend Sharon has an awesome cat named Melvin, aka Mel or Mr. Mel. His name comes from him being "mellow." The last time Sharon and I hung out we brushed him on the porch and he really liked it) Now I need to go make some food.

(a stouffer's lasagna is microwaving) So yesterday at work, Mathis was like "So how close are you to Boone?" He wanted me to go to the Boone store and get a case of rotisserie chickens. As everyone knows, I'm not really "close" to anything, living at Dad's house, but luckily I was going to a family picnic at McHose in Boone so I said I could. Thus there was a big bag of 12 raw chickens and watery chicken blood in our fridge overnight (the box wouldn't fit!)

I am trying to break my car
mood:    relaxed
Today is August 6, in the wee small hours of the morning. "Last night" watched Dodgeball again, this time with Jess. Just as good the second time, although I laughed too early at some of the jokes that I remembered. I feel *shocked* -Jason Bateman as "Pepper." We missed the beginning cuz I guess they don't show previews for the late late movies. Once we saw Stephen Root as Gordon, Jessica asked me, "Is that Milton?" "Yeah, or Jimmy James if you prefer." She was incredulous. Then as I'm up late, trying to download this Will Ferrell/GWB thing, I was watching a random episode of Roseanne that also featured Stephen Root as some kinda (perhaps incompetent) lawyer.

Oh yeah, as for the title. Yeah it's a takeoff on that Wilco thing. But seriously, my car is falling apart. The ignition, the one that could start without a key, is all busted, and there's even more wrong which had been hidden/disguised by the ignition problems. Weds. night Dad and I put the car in neutral and pushed it down the driveway so a tow truck (aiee!) could come get it and take it into town and get fixed. Today/morrow (that should be a new word, for when you're up late and you want to speak about something coming up later that same day but it's a sleep away, short as it might be) I'm taking the pickup out to Cedar Falls to help the Chris move his stuff. So he doesn't have to lose the other arm and leg renting another freak'n' U-Haul.

Strange things afoot at Circle K
mood:    weird
Today is August 7. Woke up from a ridiculously long nap, convinced I was in the apartment. Struck by the similarities. Bed in opposite corner from door, under a window. Lots of stuff opposite from bed with closets facing bed. Mostly I think it was the "under a window" part that got to me. The differences are that I don't have a TV in my home bedroom and the window is to the east, not west.

Happy with my TV Shows
mood:    happy
Today is August 17. From 5 to 7 is a generally nice time out at the house because of the syndicated programming on channels 17 and 23. Right now Joey is sweet-talking a pineapple (he was rehearsing for a role). Unfortunately I also saw a commercial that says "Fear Factor" will be added to this lineup come fall. Boo.

I got a book on XML and it seems pretty awesome so far. The reading, I mean. I haven't written any actual code yet ;-)

Now for a summary of Fun Times with Jess. Saturday the 14th we went, along with my dad, Jonathan, his friend Julian, and Dad's cousin John, to Knoxville Nationals! Yeah, it was super awesome. We watched Steve Kinser, "The King of the Outlaws" work his way up from the C Main, to the A Main. It was exciting to watch that neon green #11 car work through the pack and earn a spot in the next race. Twice! Then on Monday, we (just Jess and I this time) went to a neighborhood meeting for MoveOn. And then on Sunday we plan to check out the Iowa State Fair for Grand Funk Railroad!

Fair Fun
mood:    apprehensive
Today is August 23. First day of school for people still at University. To Chris, Brent, Holly, others: hope it went well =) I'm worried/apprehensive because today I have a phone interview. Also I was tapped as an "Iowa Blogger" to check out & link to the Paul Johnson Arrange 4 Change blog. Learn all about the practice of "franking," where a signature of a congressperson can be used as a postage stamp. PJ and his hoods strike me as a bit too libertarian, but the site is definitely worth a look. My ego is pumped, wondering how they found this poor-excuse-for-a-blog. Four entries in the last month? I mean, really.

State Fair was pretty fun, though it left me with an overwhelming feeling of not "fitting in." Not just the grody and trashy look of many, many fairgoers, but also the Sec. of State Chet Culver was running a presidential straw poll, with JK and JE trailing! If nothing else, the experience instilled in me the importance of staying pale, never getting a tattoo under any circumstances, and making a promise to my as-yet-unborn children that I would never take them to the fair until they are old enough to manage without a stroller, or at the very least be able to show some enjoyment for the event. The last 2 are pretty obvious; the staying pale is due to all the wrinkly, overly-tan people. Despite my classist leaning, Jess and I still had a good time, enjoying the sites, sounds, and tastes of the fair. Jess was disappointed that she didn't get to see the giant bull, but we did manage to see a giant rabbit, and some normal-sized cows. Also, llamas.

A bit later Here is something I just invented. An emoticon for Iowa. [__} or you could do [ia} You have to have the curly brace on the right side so it can show how the path of the mississippi river.

In Da Basement
mood:    optimistic
Today is August 26. I went for an interview today, with a woman named Ginger. We were dressed nearly the same, so hopefully that was a mark in my favor. I was flying and hyper as is my custom in interviews. Afterwards, I ventured to the mall where the store will be (Jordan Crk.) and ate at Champps Restaurant. First, there was a bunch of TV's, the largest of which was showing women's springboard diving. [it seems I should mention here that I enjoy women's diving for many reasons, not the least of which is Loudy Torky] Next, I noticed the most excellent tunes (Heart, ELO, The Cars, etc). Also my server was very friendly and the tortellini was delicious. After a late lunch, I shopped til I nearly dropped. To complete my trip to WDM, I located a copy of the "Apartment Finder" and managed to view the inside of one, and the outside of several more possibilities. On the way home, I also checked out a "ranch-style" apt. in Grimes, and bought a pizza from the Madrid Casey's. Presently I found myself in a considerable monsoon, which had not let up by the time I reached home. I have been in the basement since then, watching an interesting movie called Withnail and I. If you like British people, or drunks, or especially drunk British people, you should check it out. I imagine soon I should venture back upstairs, to check on the weather and bring in the spoils from my trip. Update as soon as I know whether I have the job.

Brooding in his Tower
mood:   ecstatic
Today is August 27. Like The Necromancer, I'm in a tower. But brooding? Hardly. More like grinning like an idiot. For I have been offered the position of Mac Genius for the forthcoming Apple Store in the Jordan Creek Town Center!!! Party party party!!! A real job at last for the Rachel. The store opens on November 6th, the day after my 24th birthday. (So that means I'll be partying on the 4th, heh). I gotta admit those "When can you start" ads have sort of cheapened the experience for me of being offered my first real job on the phone, but I'm still very, very psyched. Well-wishers (those who don't wish me any specific harm, or just wish to get in on the discount) can phone or email at their discretion. I will resign the Hy-Veeidency effective at noon tomorrow. Those hobos and freaks won't have Rachel Hadaway to kick around anymore.

Ironically, this comes just on the heels of my reading the first couple chapters of Nickel and Dimed, an excellent yet profoundly depressing and sad book. Given my recent frustrations in the job search, Gary's helpful comments that he was sure I would become a "lifer" at Hy-Vee, and my own succeptibility to suggestion, it's easy to understand how I felt I might be stuck in this low-pay-world forever. Granted, the Apple Store is still retail, but it's fairly upscale, and I won't be doing much selling as I understand it. Plus the company offers great benefits, not often to be found at the local greasy spoon or maid service. I'm done washing other people's dishes! Done, I say! Ok, I had to get that out. Let's hope it doesn't jinx me ;-)
